The desk has been rewired and a new train brake controllers fitted, believed to be from a Class 141. Necessary linkage has been installed to ensure 'mirror' action of these as with the straight air brake (original) and power/reverser controls. The loco is being rebuilt as dual (air & vacuum) braked and some modifications made to the gauge panels made to accomodate larger air pipe dials.
The various orange cable channels, connection boxes and conduits have all been stripped, primed, undercoated and glossed with some newly made to suit redesign as required.
A full set of Varta battery cells have been installed in the 'B' end battery boxes and have successfully helped to power the oil priming pump during futher pressure testing. Wooden packing pieces have been manufactured and installed to prevent battery movement when the loco is in motion.
A refurbished starter motor contactor panel has been designed and constructed from a suitable donor unit and refitted to the 'A' end bulkhead. With pressure and temperature gauges piped, the power unit was successfully started on the 30th of April 2011.
Final electrical connections and sequence testing is now underway. All systems, guages, bulbs etc will be adjusted as necessary before being 'signed off'.
The rebuild has included new insulation and pegboard interior panels. All woodwork trim fabricated from scratch and finished with paint and varnish as appropriate. New cab flooring has been manufactured.
The centre roof section overhauled including resealing, strip and paint. Window frames, doors and glazing have all been removed and renovated, checked and test fitted. Wiper motor adapter plates have been fabricated and new motors sourced, the old ones were shot at!
The cab was refitted in January 2005, the cab floor was refitted and doors re-hung during August 2010. Test fitting of the window frames went well but final fitting proved rather difficult. The component parts of the cabside windows were reluctant to meet up and fixings caused problems, several were tried including various self-tapping screws and pop rivets of different sizes, in the end 'Rivnuts' were used although this also meant drilling out the screw-holes to 7mm through steel weld in places!
As of January 2011 all of the window frames were fitted and await glazing. The wiper motor adapter plates and new motors were fitted in early March 2011, these have been plumbed and tested with portable compressed air but require some fettling once the windows are re-glazed as they currently 'have a mind of their own!'
Final fitting will include refurbished seats and arm rests along with a thorough clean, polish and paint as required.
