January 30th 2010, Baron Street Works, Bury

With an initial team of 3, the day's main tasks were trying to complete the coolant system pipe work as well as finding and fitting as much as of the fuel and oil system pipe work as possible.

The day began in 'Paddy', the ex-NIR thumper unit we have at Bury, where some of the old bits of D9531 are currently stored - a rummage round to find any pipework and fittings relevant to D9531 produced a pile of parts to work with.

The coolant system was first up; most pipes had been previously connected up with silicon hoses, with just a few clips missing. There was, however, one hose and pipe set that wasn't lined up properly (photos below). To remedy this the Ermeto coupling that connects to the drain system needed slackening off, and the pipe twisting round until it lined up, not easy in the confined spaces!

The fuel and oils systems were next up; the fuel filter housing and connections were cleaned and this was refitted to the mounting on the turbo bracket. Pipes connecting the fuel header tank to the filter and filter to the fuel pumps on either side, were found and fitted. This leaves the fuel spills from the injectors and fuel pumps to connect up to the side fuel tanks once suitable pipe work is found.

Connections from the sump, up via a swan neck pipe to the oil-priming pump were then fitted along with 2 flexible hoses connecting the pipes from the Hydrostatic oil tank to the Hydrostatic drive on the free end of the engine - the latter was only possible at one end as unions were missing off the pump itself.

Mid afternoon, Les Tappenden arrived with all the new brake pins and bushes, which his company had been commissioned to make for us. He also had kindly transported some of the brake rigging from Castlecroft down to the loco works. This was then placed on 9531 ready for fitting later in February. All in all a great days progress, lots of jigsaws figured out and foundations laid for further progress later in February.
