First job of the day was to investigate and resolve an overheating issue discovered during the test runs. The general thoughts were that the heat exchanger had become blocked, a known problem with Class 14's. Adam emptied out the coolant and Jason removed the heat exchanger. Once removed the top was taken off and low and behold the top of the exchanger was full of rust. Jason set about removing the accumulated gunk and cleaning the exchanger out.

Adam then made an additional frame side for the one of the side windows from an old western window frame to prevent the individual sections from falling out. The frame was cut to length and fitted using some adhesive. Matt Sumners made a start on drelling the buffer beam side panels that fix between the buffer beam and the corner steps. Once completed he gave them all a coat of green primer.
Dave cut two pieces of clear Perspex, one to cover the fire alarm pull located in the cab and one for the cooler group level switch. Dave and Matt S then put the various parts of the overhauled and re-covered seats back together ready for fitting. With that complete Matt S cut and ground off the old shunting pole stands from the shunters steps at each corner.
Wiring fed and connected to the cab heaters, not the
prettiest as yet, but running in March its important they work first! |
Matt Lindley spent the afternoon wiring in the heaters in the cab. While this was going Alan Lee was carrying out tests on Ernest's various systems.

Adam and Jason continued with the cooling system. Alan had mentioned about a leak from one of the breather pipes so Adam fixed that. Jason meanwhile reconnected the heat exchanger and associated pipework. With the system back together the coolant was pumped back into the loco.

Mark glossing the yellow wasp stripes |
Mark sanded down and then painted the yellow wasp stripes while Colin made a start on painting the buffer beam side panels in black gloss. After that Colin gave the marker lights a light sanding down before applying undercoat.
With the coolant system back together and filled, Ernest was run up to check all was ok. Adam and Jason added some further bolts through the 'B' end bulkhead to the 'B' end sideframes that had been decided on as a 'belt and braces' addition to prevent any movement.

Graham glossing the cab doors |
Finally Graham gave both cab doors a coat of gloss paint to match the rest of the cab. And that brought the weekend to an end.
A good weekend's work but still much to do in preparation for the Gala event!
