After a quick meeting tasks were agreed and work got underway. Alan was busy most the day sorting out wiring to the electrical cubicle inside the the cab. Jason unloaded the battery box battons to allow the battery lead glands to be fitted to the battery box bulk heads and loco body.

Jim, Dave and Kris started by getting the compressor aftercooler out of 'Paddy' to assess what needed to be done to mount it. It was found that one end bent the wrong way and a suitable way of correcting this had to be worked out before proceeding. With the modifications made, Jim and Dave temporarily mounted it on the loco. Meanwhile, Kris cleaned and painted the carden shaft cover.

Dave and Jim started building the air tank frame strengtheners, however, some light fingered friend had taken all the 2" 'angle iron'. A lot of time was wasted finding suitable replacement bar and with one thing and another only one strengthener was made and fitted. Jason made a start on greasing up the carden shafts but some of the nipples didn't fit the available grease gun, so some modifications to the desk were completed instead, allowing the new larger air guages to fit correctly.

First job was tidy up in the cab, all the tools, bits of loose wire, nuts, bolts etc that were lying around were collected, then out with the hand brush moving the dust and smaller debris into piles so that it could be picked up using the vacuum cleaner. A solvent spray was then used to degrease the area.

Next was the space under the cab where the carden shafts pass and final drive unit is housed, not a great deal of space down there but this was also cleaned up as far as possible. Having found some Acid etch spray paint, the aluminium plate on the underside of the carden shaft cover was treated to a coat.

After making a trip to Castlecroft in the car to borrow another grease gun, the greasing of the carden shaft knuckles was completed. The carden shaft cover had since dried so, with everything cleaned, painted, greased or de-greased, it was put back into position underneath the desk.
Work is progressing quickly towards solving a few minor electrical problems and it is hoped to have the power unit started very soon, as of the 19th of April D9531 is electrically live.
